Volunteer Application Process
Thank you! We love that you are interested in volunteering to help us help the animals we serve here at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter and can’t wait to meet you! Whether you enjoy real “hands-on” experience working with animals or would prefer an office atmosphere, teaching children the humane treatment of animals or if you are great interacting with the public – we have a job for you! The list of current opportunities changes monthly and is available at each orientation.
All volunteers are asked to make a minimum six month commitment to the shelter of at least two hours per week.
Steps to becoming a Volunteer
- Watch the Volunteer Information Video (above).
Complete the Volunteer Application, and submit your $20 administrative fee ($5 for kids 9 and under).
This fee is to help cover costs of providing you with a volunteer t-shirt, name badge, etc.
Wait for the Volunteer Coordinator to respond to you via email with information on how to register for orientation and training classes.

Community Volunteering Opportunities:
We’re currently looking for the below volunteers to help assist the Cheyenne Animal Shelter.
VOLUNTEER CAT TRAPPER
Reports To: Medical Director Location: Veterinary Clinic
Age Requirement: Minimum age 18 yrs Time commitment: Variable
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing relationships with colony cat caretakers
- Scheduling trapping days with caretakers and veterinary staff
- Setting up traps on trapping days
- Transporting cats from colony to shelter and back again for veterinary care
- Helping to educate community members on community cats and how the Cheyenne Animal Shelter is approaching their management.
Qualifications:
- Must be an active volunteer ages 18 and up
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter
- Compassion for animals and their welfare
- Professional, positive and friendly attitude
- Good communication and listening skills
- Ability to work within a team setting
- Must be able to work around cats
Training/support provided: Complete Volunteer Orientation and attend brief training class on TNR. Work with a mentor until you are comfortable trapping on your own
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Requires standing for short periods of time, being able to lift 15-20 lbs on a regular basis, and working around cats.
Attire: Follow guidelines in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Handbook.

VOLUNTEER VETERINARY ASSISTANT
Reports To: Veterinary Team Lead Location: Veterinary Clinic
Age Requirement: Minimum age 15 yrs Time commitment: 2 hrs every other week (or more if you want!)
Key Responsibilities:
- Helping clean and care for the animals in the veterinary clinic
- Helping clean and pack surgical instruments
- Helping monitor recovery of surgical patients
Qualifications:
- Must be an active volunteer ages 15 and up
- Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter
- Compassion for animals and their welfare
- Professional, positive and friendly attitude
- Good communication and listening skills
- Ability to work within a team setting
- Must be able to work around a variety of species
Training/support provided: Complete Volunteer Orientation and have a trial working day in the veterinary clinic. Work with a mentor until you are comfortable trapping on your own
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Requires standing for short periods of time, being able to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis, and working around species.
Attire: Follow guidelines in the Volunteer Policy and Procedures Handbook.

PHOTOGRAPHER/VIDEOGRAPHER
- Take photos of our adoptable animals with a digital camera for use in marketing their availability. (Must have your own camera)
- Make videos of adoptable animals for use in marketing their availability.
- Work with our database to assign photos to the correct animals.
SHELTER ADMINISTRATIVE SPECIALIST
- Assists the staff with filing, word processing, mailings and contacting customers.
- Aid in other areas of operation as needed.
COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE
Shifts run from daily from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. within the exception of holiday closures.
If you would like to fulfill your court-ordered community service work at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, please print and fill out our Application for Community Service placement and return it to the shelter. Space is limited to three community service workers per day.
TRANSPORTATION/DRIVERS
SCHOOL/COLLEGE SPONSORED COMMUNITY SERVICE
DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE
- Assist development staff in processing and sending out mailings, writing thank you notes and making thank you calls to donors.
- Help update the donor software.
DOG WALKER/CAT SOCIALIZER
- Provide exercise for the dogs by taking them for a walk.
- Teach dogs basic manners and commands to increase the chances of finding a lifelong home
