The Foster Effect

Fosters are a vital part of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter’s mission and operations. Opening their hearts and homes to our community’s most vulnerable animals, their behind-the-scenes efforts have made an immeasurable impact on the lives of countless people and pets.

Many don’t realize just how important fosters are, or that three lives are changed for every single pet welcomed into foster care: the foster pet, their future family, and the animal that takes their vacant spot inside the shelter.

Every foster home creates space for healing, growth, and second chances. Sometimes that means helping a medical case recover. Other times, it means giving a nervous animal the confidence they need to find a family. No matter the situation, foster families are often the bridge between hardship and a happy future.

Take Happy, for example.

When this sweet stray arrived at the Shelter with a fractured tibia, he needed more than medical treatment—he needed a place to rest and recover. One of our incredible foster families stepped up, providing him with a safe, comfortable environment where he could heal. During his time in foster care, Happy charmed everyone he met, from the family's children to their resident cats and dogs. By the time he was medically cleared, he wasn't just physically healed—he was thriving. Soon after, he found his forever home.

For animals facing even more complex medical challenges, foster care can be lifesaving.

Avocado Ranch arrived alongside 15 other cats suffering from severe illness, including FIP. While our veterinary team worked tirelessly to save her life, recovery required weeks of monitoring, care, and support. Animals like Avocado Ranch often need environments where they can rest, decompress, and continue healing outside the shelter. Foster homes provide exactly that. Today, Avocado Ranch is living the life every shelter pet deserves—safe, loved, and adopted.

Sometimes, fostering creates a bond so strong that "temporary" becomes forever.

Azalea came to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter with a torn ligament and a large cyst that required extensive medical care. Throughout her recovery journey, her foster family stood by her side, helping her heal and regain her strength. They celebrated every milestone, comforted her through every challenge, and ultimately realized they couldn't imagine life without her. Today, Azalea is living on the Oregon coast with the very family that first welcomed her into foster care.

Then there are the foster families who help animals through life's most important moments.

When Honey gave birth to nine puppies, she needed a quiet, safe place where she could focus on being a mom. A loving foster family opened their home, providing the calm environment, attention, and support that allowed Honey and her puppies to thrive during those critical first weeks. While shelter staff provided guidance and medical support, it was the foster family's daily dedication that helped ensure this young family got the healthy start they deserved.

Honey was even adopted by her foster, with every single one of her pups finding loving homes of their own!

These stories may feature different animals, but they all have one thing in common: someone said yes. Yes to opening their home. Yes to sharing their time. Yes to helping an animal who needed them.

Foster families are often the first people to show a pet what safety feels like. They help frightened animals build confidence, give medical cases the space they need to recover, and provide individualized care that prepares pets for life in a permanent home. Every day, their compassion creates opportunities that simply wouldn't exist otherwise.

Right now, more animals are waiting for that same chance.
