Volunteers embody our “People. Pets. Community” philosophy here at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. Their selfless service is crucial to the success of our organization and we want our volunteers to feel empowered to learn, to grow, and to share their passion with others. Our volunteers are our advocates and greatest asset in the loving and compassionate care we provide to the animals in our care and our amazing Cheyenne Community.
Meet The Volunteer Coordinator!
I started with the Cheyenne Animal Shelter as a volunteer in April of 2022 and instantly fell in love with the animals, the people, and the mission of the organization. I felt lucky to work with such an amazing team and to make a difference in the lives of so many pets and people in our community. Following a summer of volunteer service and a fall of board service, I decided to pursue my passion full-time and jump on board as the new volunteer coordinator. My vision for the volunteer program is for volunteers to be an integral part of our organization and to feel accepted as part of the team. My goal is to foster an environment that encourages learning and growth and to empower volunteers to be advocates for our animals and our community. I feel it is crucial to recognize and embrace passion and place volunteers where they are passionate. To get a dog, cat, or critter to a new and loving home takes a village and while not all jobs are glamorous, it is important to see the bigger picture and know that all are crucial to successful outcomes for the animals in our care. I want to thank you all for volunteering with us, I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you, and as always please stop by my office or give me a call.

Steps to Become a Volunteer

We kindly ask that volunteers commit a minimum of 6 hours a month and a 6 month commitment to the shelter. Youth volunteers are encouraged, but volunteers under the age of 16, must be accompanied by a parent/guardian while they are at the shelter. Please see the below list for job age requirements.
Buddy. (6-10 years old): Read to the animals, draw the animals, cat socializer, and making enrichment. Parent must be present.
Pal. (11-15 years old): Dog walker (green level dogs), cat socializer, donations, dishes/laundry, kennel cleaning. Parent must be present.
Sidekick (16-17 years old): Dog walker (green level dogs), dog/cat socialization, office assistant, dishes/laundry, donations, kennel cleaning.
Comrad (18 years and up): Anything and everything!

Please see the below steps for the volunteer Onboarding process:
Online Orientation: All of our orientation materials are in a digital format so volunteers are able to complete at their leisure.
Pay Orientation Fee: You will receive a link to pay in the volunteer welcome email, or you can click on the blue button below to pay.
Phone Interview: The phone interview covers volunteer goals, program questions, or an questions from the online orientation materials.
Onboarding/Training Shift: This introductory shift is a great way for volunteers to get to know the shelter! Volunteers will sign waivers, get a tour of the shelter, learn the basics of dog handling, supply locations, and all of the basics necessary to volunteer here at the shelter.
First Shift: Following the completion of the onboarding process, volunteers are ready for their first shift!

Group Service
Other Volunteer Opportunities
Do you have a squad of people interested in a service project? In addition to our traditional volunteer program, opportunities for groups are available at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. If you have a work team, scout troop, or social club interested in helping out, click the button below to be directed to our group page!
The Cheyenne Animal Shelter is offering community service hours to individuals interested in volunteering their time to help care for the animals at the shelter. However, please note that the shelter does not accept individuals with a history of violent offenses, theft, or felonies. If you are looking to complete community service hours, this is a great opportunity to give back to your community and make a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
